NRA Membership??? Should I do it?

OK, so I bought a revolver and some ammunition and took an NRA 10 1/2 hour firearms course at the local gun range. Now, I've gotten offers in the mail to join the NRA, which can be up to $100 for 5 years. Is this something I should do?

Is the NRA an effective advocate for 2nd Amendment rights? Do any GIM members also maintain NRA memberships? Please give me some insights. I want to do the right thing. I just know there are folks on this forum with some strong opinions on this subject.

I joined, but I won't be giving them more than $10/year. You also get $1,000 worth of firearms insurance just for being a member. It's hard to beat that deal.

I also joined GOA.

Im a member of the NRA only because it was a gift. I'm going to be joining GOA tomorrow because we need all the support we can get in the coming times where we as gun owners will be ostrasized more than anytime in our past.

The NRA does some good stuff. They were instrumental in passing the law that prohibits government from confiscating weapons during civil emergencies as was done after Katrina. They also helped defeat the anti handgun measures that were almost passed in San Francisco. They actually get stuff done. I know that Gun Owners of America are liked better by some people but I never hear of them actually getting pro gun laws passed.

Yes, join the NRA.

Re: NRA Membership??? Should I do it?

Absolutely. As someone said earlier, strength in numbers. I'm a member of both the NRA and the GOA. True, the NRA compromises, but when it comes to Obama's gun confiscation I want a 4M member organization fighting on our side.

Like the BATFE needs to data mine NRA or GOA to know you own firearms.:hahaha:

Before joining the NRA, one should ask themselves why the self appointed Second Coming of 'Second Ammendment support groups' lobbied FOR the GCA, and the NFA.

As my old buddy Hoarder used to say, Que Bono?

jrog100 07-11-2008 09:16 AM

Re: NRA Membership??? Should I do it?

Ofcourse you should join. The statement "the NRA sold us out" is a bunch of stupid horseshit. There is no other organization that has as much power to fight for gun owners rights than the NRA. Who was it that sued DC on behalf of Heller? They are also in the process of suing the cities of Chicago and SF for their illegal gun bans. Some people say "JOIN THE GOA, THEY'RE BETTER"? WTF, I've never once heard them mentioned in the news going to bat for gun owners.

They aren't a perfect oganization. There's no such thing. They do the best that they can which is a lot.

So, the answer is yes. Join the NRA.

graspAU 07-11-2008 09:31 AM

Re: NRA Membership??? Should I do it?

Join the NRA and GOA. The NRA does support the shooting sports very well in addition to the legal aspect. They are not a perfect organization and can't make everyone happy, but they are worth joining in my opinion. I also joined the JPFO and I'm not even Jewish. So think about joining all 3.

My private gun club requires membership. I think one of the reasons is that the NRA supports the matches administratively. All of the match scores go into the NRA and they give out shooting rankings.

Squirrel Bait 07-11-2008 09:39 AM

Re: NRA Membership??? Should I do it?

YES, and GOA too. If it weren't for groups like these we would have lost much more of the 2nd Ammendment. What I don't like about the NRA is they keep calling and asking for money. Nothing pisses me off like that. All the mailings too. Just give me my magazine and leave me alone.

Yes, join the NRA.

The NRA attains "victories" in the same way the French do: by retreating and then calling for an armistice in stages.

Like the frog in water slowly gaining in temperature.

Take the NRA membership dues and buy guns and ammunition. Legal maneuvering and lawyer games ain't going to stop it.

False. The NRA REFUSED to join the Heller case for months. They finally joined after a HUGE grassroots outrage campaign. And even then they were 'foot draggers' by all accounts (other than their own self aggrandizing story).

Your statement that the NRA has more power to fight FOR gunowners is correct. Anyone with moderate cognative abilities should ask themselves WHY they don't use this power. Their list of accomplishments is as long and grand as Neville Chaimberlain's.

And while I'm on the subject, WHY did the NRA lobby FOR the GCA and NFA? And WHY does their website LIE and say they were against them?

Anyone care to explain that, rather than using the 'your facts are horsehockey compared to my opinion' method?

True....because GOA doesn't put out splashy, self congratulatory press releases + the press has the NRA for their poster child for everything that is wrong with guns, so they don't bother even finding out about GOA.

You might want to check this out before joining the NRA:

http://www.nrawol.net/

I am a member of GOA, and also my state gun rights group, OFF (Oregon Firearms Federation). I would encourage everyone to join a state level group, if you have one.

These guys are good, too:

NAGR (National Association of Gun Rights)

A "sheenie" is a scrap metal dealer that visits printing companies, usually 2-3 times per year. He has a truck with a scale, and buys used lithographic plates, usually paying cash. The fellow that bought our plates was a black guy out of Chicago. When I owned my company I used the money to take the whole shop out to lunch, and the balance was put into the "coffee fund" to provide coffee (and bread, peanut-butter, and jelly) in the "break room".

So these scrap metal dealers are vaguely disreputable, much like the old guy in Peoria who used to pedal his cart around town sharpening scissors and knives??? And that's why J.D.Rockinfeller made the comment, "They (nra)have a sheenie running it now" with two thumbs down?

No, he meant a Jew, or Jewess, is the President of the NRA.

Either way it has no bearing, the NRA sucks regaurdless of the President. I loved Charleton Hesston, but the guy was no proponent of the Second Ammendment.

AZLiberty 07-11-2008 05:09 PM

Re: NRA Membership??? Should I do it?

Ok, I am a life member. I joined as a life member so that I could vote for members of the board. I've been unhappy with them for several years, because they have been FAR to willing to compromise with the Anti's. That being said, like an above poster noted, you have to fix them from the inside. To that end, the folks on AR15.com are planning to nominate two of the "arfcom" members to the board come the next NRA board election.

You get a pretty decent gun mag (American Rifleman) as a benefit of membership. There are other benefits as well such as the aforementioned insurance.

Now that I've muddied the waters, I'll say that the two hardcore pro gun groups to look at are the GOA and the JPFO.

(I'm also a GOA life member)

So why don't you go join the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence. Seems you'd fit in better there anyhow. You obviously don't care about anything but COMPLAINING about them not being perfect. You've overlooked everything that the NRA has ever done in it's 122 years. How convenient for support of your short sighted simplistic argument. You really should consider looking it up!

For everyone on this board that's an NRA Member, GOA Member, NFF, NAGR member etc., good for you. Trashing any of these organizations is beyond stupid - something Sara Brady would be proud of. These groups support gun rights, period. And that's a good thing.

Alright...look at it this way:

Let's say that half of the about 90 million gun owners in America were members of the NRA - thats 45 million members, compared to about 4 million now. With 45 million members, would any state or federal government deal with a single gun control law? Not a chance. Strength in numbers.

AZLiberty,

I can respect someone like yourself (or Knox) who knows what is going on, but chooses to stay a member to fight for positive change. I have no respect for the 'they're good' and 'they're better than nothing' crowd.
